The Storytellers

For hundreds and thousands of years, across continents, cultures, traditions and beliefs, we as a species have been storytellers. These stories have taught us the basics of how to survive, the dangers and the joys of living in a shifting world. They have connected us to one another, and served to distinguish and celebrate our differences. Most importantly, the roots of these stories hold a deep connection with the land, teaching us how to respect and live symbiotically within it, intrinsically linked as we are.

Some stories span across countries and continents, some are held in deep valleys and small tucked away places. Every inch of land will have a story to tell in some form or other. Stories of wiser people who once walked in our place, stories of the tiniest organisms living in a handful of soil, stories held in the roots of ancient trees, stories of a shifting landscape. This connection to land, once so deeply ingrained within us and held by these stories we shared, has been severed.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that we are able to re-establish this connection, in order to celebrate, fight, protect and care for these habitats and landscapes, and all those who call them home. If access to the land and the stories it holds is denied, how do we expect this instinctive connection to be re-awakened, to thrive and grow? Nobody truly owns land, just as nobody truly owns a story, we are simply their custodians.
